On the theory that everybody loves a happy ending, let me update you on the dachshund I encountered yesterday. I said I was going to notify the dog's human companions that he was out. I hadn't yet done so when, this afternoon, I came across him again during my walk with Shelbie. Three neighbor kids were on the sidewalk several houses down. A girl of about four was holding the dog by the collar. I recognized him immediately. He looked scared. I said, "I know where that dog lives; he's been getting through the fence." The boy said they had called the dog's owner, using the number on the tag. Just then, a car pulled up and a man got out. I told him that I had seen his dog yesterday in front of my house and explained that the dog has been getting through the fence. I assume that the man has sense enough to close the hole. You can't blame the dog for wanting to get out and explore, but it's not safe for him. Next time I see the kids, I'll tell them that they done good. I might add that the girl is brave. Of all the kids in that area, she's the only one who isn't afraid of Shelbie. She stands near the sidewalk and extends her hand to Shelbie when we go past. Shelbie, who is a sweetheart, licks her hand and sniffs her. Some people are afraid of dogs. Some are not. I wonder why.
